TRIBUTE SHOW FOR GIANNI VERSACE

Gianni Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, in the South of Italy, on December 2nd 1946.

He began his career at a very young age with an apprenticeship at his mother’s sewing business.

In 1977 he created his own signature collection “Versace” after being encouraged by his success working for another brand. In September of the same year, Versace, presented his first ever fashion show in Milan and later opened his first boutique in Via della Spiga in Milan.

After only twenty years since his empire began, more precisely on July 15th 1997, the fashion world was shocked when Gianni was bluntly shot and killed.

His empire was later taken over by his heart broken sister, Donatella.

The endless love for Gianni led Donatella to transform the Spring 2018 Fashion Show to a Tribute Show to his life and works, for the 20th anniversary of his death.

The runway was inspired by the Greek history and characterised with archival patterns and updates on old looks, as an homage to the late designer.

Although the collection was jaw dropping, the moment that really had everyone in shock was the finale.

In fact, Donatella decided to reunite Gianni’s “legacy” composed of the biggest supermodels of the 90s: Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen and, Italy’s pride, Carla Bruni.

They were all wearing gold chain mail to echo a 1994 Richard Avedon-lensed campaign for the brand, or, as Donatella called it, “his dazzling metal mash”.
